The most common question from expecting mothers: "When should I do my maternity shoot?" Book too early and the bump is barely visible; leave it too late and you are too uncomfortable to enjoy the session. This guide gives you the complete, honest answer.
The ideal window: Weeks 28–34
The sweet spot for maternity photography is between your 28th and 34th week. The bump is prominent and beautifully rounded — clearly visible and photographically striking — but you are still comfortable enough to move and enjoy the session.
By week 35 and beyond, many women find sustained movement uncomfortable. Before week 28, the bump may not have the fullness that makes maternity portraits truly powerful.
When to book: During your second trimester
Book your session around weeks 20–24. Popular weeks (December through February in Jharkhand) fill up quickly. Booking early means you get your preferred date and time of day.
We hold flexible dates for maternity clients because due dates occasionally change. If your session date needs to shift, we accommodate it at no charge.
Indoor vs outdoor maternity sessions
Indoor studio sessions: Controlled lighting, comfortable temperature, wardrobe access, complete privacy. Ideal for a cleaner, editorial aesthetic or uncertain weather.
Outdoor sessions: Natural light, lush environments, more spacious compositions. Ideal for golden-hour portraits in parks or heritage locations around Ranchi.
Many clients choose a blend — outdoor golden-hour portraits, then studio setups. This gives you the best of both worlds.
What to wear for a maternity photoshoot
Flowing fabrics photograph beautifully — maxi skirts, draping gowns, linen and silk. They move gracefully and frame the bump naturally.
Best colours: earthy tones (rust, terracotta, sage, cream), deep jewel tones (emerald, burgundy, navy), or simple white and black.
Avoid: heavy patterns, large logos, and anything tight in uncomfortable places.
We also maintain a small wardrobe of maternity gowns available to borrow for sessions.
Can partners and children be included?
Absolutely — and these inclusion shots often become the most treasured photographs of the session.
Partner portraits add an important dimension to the story. Sibling introductions are wonderful — we start with siblings when they are fresh, with a break point for snacks.
