Is Drone Photography Allowed at Indian Weddings in Jharkhand? Rules & Safety Guide

October 2026 5 min read

From sweeping aerial shots of the Baraat dancing down Kanke Road to dramatic bird's-eye views of the Jaimala stage under a cascade of fireworks, drone cinematography has become a hallmark of modern luxury weddings. But is drone photography legally allowed at Indian weddings in Jharkhand? What are the DGCA safety regulations, and when can a drone cause serious hazards?

1. The Legal Framework: DGCA Digital Sky Regulations

In India, drone operations are governed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Drone Rules. Drones are categorized by weight: Nano (under 250 grams, such as DJI Mini series) and Micro (250g to 2kg, such as DJI Air and Mavic series).

• Green Zones: Most open residential areas, banquet lawns, and resort farmhouses across Ranchi, Hazaribagh, and Dhanbad fall in Digital Sky "Green Zones" where recreational and commercial drone photography is permitted without requiring special flight clearance up to 400 feet.

• Red & Yellow Zones: Areas within 5 to 12 km of Ranchi Birsa Munda Airport (Hinoo, Hatia), defense installations, or government secretariat buildings are restricted airspace where drone flights without prior ATC clearance are strictly prohibited.

2. Outdoor Wedding Lawns vs Indoor Banquet Halls

• Outdoor Lawns & Resorts (Recommended): Open venues like BNR Hotel lawns, Morabadi grounds, or Khelgaon banquet lawns are ideal for drone cinematography. Drones provide grand cinematic perspectives of the Baraat entry and stage decor.

• Indoor Banquet Halls (Safety Hazard): We strictly advise against flying standard high-speed camera drones inside closed banquet halls. Massive flower hangings, fabric drapes, heavy crystal chandeliers, and banquet air drafts create severe risks of propeller entanglement and crowd injury. If indoor aerials are needed, our pilots only use specialized lightweight cinewhoop drones with full propeller guards.

3. Critical Safety Rules During Wedding Ceremonies

1. Fireworks & Cold Pyro Hazard: Flying directly over cold pyro fountains or celebratory rockets during Jaimala will melt plastic propellers and send a drone crashing into the couple.

2. High-Voltage Overhead Cables: Older wedding venues in Jharkhand frequently have low-hanging temporary electrical cables for stage lighting. A certified pilot always conducts a visual hazard survey in daylight.

3. Night & Fog Limitations: Drones require optical positioning sensors. In dense winter fog (common in Ranchi in December and January), automated positioning fails. Only seasoned manual pilots should operate in night fog.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to pay extra for drone coverage at our wedding?+

Drone cinematography is included in all Jharkhand Frames Premium and Luxury packages. For custom or single-day packages, it can be added for ₹8,000 to ₹12,000 per day including a licensed pilot.

Can drones fly in rain or high wind?+

No. Commercial camera drones are not waterproof. In heavy rain or gale-force winds exceeding 35 km/h, flights must be paused for crowd safety and equipment preservation.
